Music Muse of the Day – Jezebel by Sade

As I sat listening this morning, I was struck by a melancholy in the soul.
Coming from where I came from as a little girl to where I am now, and from listening to the women in my circle who are my age and my sisters, I think all of us have a little Jezebel inside just waiting to come out. The name Jezebel brings up images of a woman who is what society would call a slut, but in actuality, Jezebel is merely an archetype of a woman who knows her own spirit and who is not willing to settle into the pre-constructed mold of an ideal that keeps her down.
Frankly, I want to be Jezebel. I want to go for what I want – not what society says I should want. That means realizing the feminine sensual spirit inside and acknowledging that I hold the power within to be the woman I want. Now that I have said it and made it known to Source, what next?
I become my own hero! I become a truly empowered woman that makes her own way in the world knowing that if I am to become Renee in her fullness, then what I need to embody that magnificence is up to me to birth into reality.
There is a stanza in the song that speaks to all of us as women who are becoming our truth:
Jezebel, Jezebel
Won’t try to deny where she came from
You can see it in her pride
And the raven in her eyes
Try show her a better way
She’ll say you don’t know what you’ve been missing
And by the time she blinks you know she won’t be listening
To those women who have claimed their own beauty and strength, I hear you. That is what women like Maya Angelou, Gloria Steinman, Z. Budapest, Jackie Onassis and Madonna have been saying. “Try to show me a better way – you don’t know what you’ve been missing!” You can argue all you want, but “she won’t be listening.” Why? There is no better way. If we are to become strong women who stand deserving their own way. Then:
Reach for the top she said
And the sun is gonna shine
Every winter was a war she said
I want to get what’s mine!
Yeah, “the sun is gonna shine!”
Jezebel, in all of her glory tells us to go for our dreams, get what is ours, and live!
Stand strong – Stand proud! Be your own hero!
Yeah, I wanna be Jezebel!
