I was surprised with this song.  Seriously?  What is the message here?  I moved to the next song in my playlist, but just had to go back.  No mistakes, right?  So, I found the lyrics and listened.

Of course, we all know that the song is about those soldiers from Africa – the “dreadlocked rastas” – that were taken to slavery and brought to American to fight the war.  I’m not from Africa, but I am a woman.  Today, I wrote in my Feminine Actif blog about a quote from a Republican Right-wing conservative about women not being able to control their libido.  And the connection from Buffalo Soldier to the battle in which women always seem to be involved was made.

The women who fought for suffrage, the women who fought for equal rights, the women who fought for control of our own bodies – we are the Buffalo Soldiers.  Women, have been in bondage of society and what is expected of them.  I spent many years trying to do and be what society said I should do and be.  Societal expectation is, in and of itself, slavery and bondage – to a master for which there is no satisfaction and to which there is no pleasing.  If we, as a woman listen to society, we will never be good enough.

For myself, I am happy to be a Buffalo Soldier for women.  I fought “on arrival” and fought “for survival,” and I continue to be the Wild Warrior in this battle for empowerment and the knowledge that I am more than good enough.  I know where I come from and I use that knowing to do my part for women.  Yep, I rather like being a Buffalo Soldier – for women and for myself.
