My Dream

As most of my friends know, I returned to college in October to fulfill a lifelong dream of achieving a college dream.  It is true that I have completed Real Estate school in two different states, EMT training in one state, completed a ministerial degree training, completed massage therapy and holistic practitioner training and certification, and . . . . I think that is it.  But I have never completed that one piece of paper that says I have a college degree, at least from an accredited school.

So far, so good.  I am actually doing better than I had thought possible and find myself really enjoying school.  The actual studying and writing papers has challenged me in ways that have brought about tremendous growth.  And that is what I want to share with you today.

We, as women, tend to downplay our own value.  We pay too much attention to the media and what those “Mad Men” say the ideal woman is.  What is that image?  Thin, drop dead gorgeous, complacent, a sex kitten willing to whatever “Her Man” says she should do.  Oh, and we follow the lead of what everyone in our lives have told us is the right thing for us, as women, to do.  So, when we step out of the box and follow a dream, there often are challenges that seem to block our paths.  Here’s the dilemma – do we continue to follow the prescribed path set out by our mothers, grandmothers, fathers, and the “powers that be?”  Or do we forge ahead clearing the brambles leaving the trodden path for one that is new.  That is what I am doing.  Returning to the collegiate environment, albeit online collegiate environment, to achieve a degree in Journalism.

My goal is to become the serious writer exploring women’s issues and women’s rights.  I want to engage dialogue with and for women that tears down those walls and self-imposed prisons that have been created.  I want to write about women that have become their true essence – strong, beautiful in their own skin, confident, and empowered in their own right.

With the current atmosphere surrounding women’s rights and a woman’s right to control her own life and body, the timing is now.  My dream is that one day we form a bond with our sisters that is so strong that it will never be broken again.  That is my dream!
